Sir Lynden Oscar Pindling KCMG, OM, JPActive: March 22nd, 1930–August 25th 2000, Sir Lynden schooled at the Eastern Primary School, later attending the Eastern Junior School, Southern Junior School and Western Junior School, going on to attend Government High School (1943-1946. After completion of High School at age 16, he worked as a junior clerk in the Post Office Savings Bank until 1948 when he left Nassau for London to begin his legal studies, receiving his LLB from King's College, London University in August 1952. February 1953 he was called to the bar of the Middle Temple returning to Nassau and called to the Bahamian Bar June that same year. By the end of 1953, Pindling joined the Progressive Liberal Party PLP) as its legal advisor and later became Treasurer of the Party in 1954 and Chairman in 1963. Accomplishments: May, 1956, he Lynden Pindling successfully contested Nassau's Southern District in that year’s General Election, defeating Party Chairman Henry Milton Taylor (later Sir Henry Milton Taylor and the third post-Independence Governor General). This defeat led to the Executive Board of the PLP choosing between Lynden Pindling over Sir Randol Fawkes, as parliamentary leader of the PLP. Going on to lead his Party to election victories in 1967, 1968, 1972, 1977, 1982, 1987, he was elected to the House of Assembly on ten consecutive occasions. As The Bahamas’ first Black Premier, often referred to as the “Father Of Our Nation,” he represented the large black majority in the Bahamas, which led the country to independence within the Commonwealth of Nations in on 10th July, 1973, causing the Bahamas to join the United Nations that same year. The PLP under the leadership of Lynden Pindling, brought about prosperity which has given The Bahamas one of the highest standards of living in the Western Hemisphere. He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1983 and was the longest serving elected head of government in the Commonwealth. As Prime Minister; he emphasized public aid to education and the continued attraction of foreign investment, international banking, and tourism, establishing- Bahamasair, the Central Bank of The Bahamas, The National Insurance Board, The Royal Bahamas Defence Force and the Hotel Corporation. Sir Lynden was truly a man of his time and he effectively led the PLP inside and outside the House of Assembly from 1956 until his retirement in 1997.
