Nassau (New Providence)
Located on New Providence Island, Nassau being the largest city and the Commerce hub of the country is the Capital of the Bahamas. With a population of approximately 260,000, Nassau is home to nearly 80 percent of the entire population of The Bahamas and is home of the Lynden Pindling International Airport, which offers daily flights to all major cities in the United Kingdom, United States, Canada and the rest of the Caribbean. Just a 45 minute to an hour by plane from the U.S the island has become a popular weekend vacation spot for tourist traveling from both The United States and Canada. The airport also links the family islands through daily flights and charters.
Attractions: The main attractions in New Providence include, the Straw Market, located in the heart of Down Town (Bay Street), Botanical Gardens, The Andastra Gardens and Zoo, Cruises around the island, Deep-Sea Fishing, Scuba Diving, Snorkeling, Dolphin Encounter, Golfing, Island Tours, Horseback Riding and beautiful beaches. If you’re brave enough to swim with sharks, you can find that here too!
A short ride over the bridge or a brief ride by water taxi takes you to the Paradise Island. Equipped with its fine hotels, restaurant and world class entertainment, Paradise Island was expanded to international status by Kerzner International with the opening of the Atlantis-Paradise Island resort and casino. Home of the world’s largest salt and fresh aquariums, tourist and natives alike are fascinated by the underwater walks and sharks tanks. With the building of a new 50,000 square foot casino, adding an additional 150,000 square feet of public space, a second bridge was built to accommodate the influx traffic.
The Cable Beach Strip, lies West of Nassau, so named because this is where Telegraph cable first came to shore in 1892 from Jupiter Florida, which made it possible to send messages to the United States and even England. Along this strip you’ll find Super Club Breezes Bahamas, Sandals, Nassau Marriott Resort & Crystal Palace Casino, and other fine resorts all of which houses lovely beaches and dozens of fine restaurants.
