Inagua
Great Inagua Island has a population of 969 which lies only 55 miles from the eastern parts of Cuba and Haiti, is the third largest island in The Bahamas, the highest point on the island is East Hill, it encloses several lakes the most noticeable is the 12 mile long Lake Windsor also know as Lake Rosa which occupies almost ¼ of the island. The island's capital and only harbour is Matthew Town, named after George Matthew a 19th century Governor of the Bahamas. This town houses the Morton Salt Company’s main facility, producing one million tones of sea salt a year is the second largest solar saline operation in North America and Inagua's main industry employing a large percentage of the locals living on the island. Great Inagua Airport is located nearby. Great Inagua has a bird sanctuary in the centre and is home to a population of 80,000 West Indian Flamingoes and other exotic birds such as the Native Bahama Parrot, The Bahama woodstar hummingbird, Bahama Peilcans, Tri-Colour Herons, Snowy Egrets, Stripe-headed teanangers, Burrowing Owls and American Kestrels. |
