Freeport (Grand Bahamas)
Unlike its sister city Nassau, which was an old city made new so to speak. Freeport/Lucaya, located on Grand Bahama Island is more modern and is what some may call a planned city due to the fact that Mr. Wallace Groves, a Financer working in the lumber industry from Virginia was granted 50,000 acres in what was then Pine Barrens by the Bahamas Government with a mandate to develop the area, that 50,000 acres was developed to what is now known as Freeport. Under The Hawksbill Creek Agreement, signed by The Grand Bahama Port Authority (GBPA) and the Bahamas Government back in 1955, Businesses in Freeport have been operating in a Free Trade Zone, allowing them to remain tax free until the year 2054.
The main airport serving the city is The Grand Bahama International Airport, offering daily flights to the United States, have made Freeport the second most sort destination in the Bahamas and the resort center of the island. Though there are no houses of Parliament located on the island, the island does house a Government Court house with its own magistrate and district administrator, police stations and a Local Hospital.
Grand Bahama Island has a number of inviting hotels and one major casino, a variety of night time entertainment, water sport and land tours. What’s a Bahama Island without long stretches of white sandy beaches? You’ll find plenty here, some of which are even deserted. Shopping is also a feature, a stroll through Port Lucaya Marketplace; you will find an array of duty free treasures from around the world. For the nature enthusiast, Grand Bahama is home to one of the oldest underwater cave systems in the world, situated at the Lucayan National Park.
